RESUMO

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) hold great promise in highly sensitive and selective gas sensors due to their ultrahigh atomic efficiency and excellent catalytic activity. However, due to the extremely high surface energy of SACs, it is still a huge challenge to synthesize a stable single-atom metal on sensitive materials. Here, we report an atomic layer deposition (ALD) strategy for the elaborate synthesis of single-atom Pt on oxygen vacancy-rich Fe2O3 nanosheets (Pt-Fe2O3-Vo), which displayed ultrafast and sensitive detection to H2, achieving the stability of Pt single atoms. Gas-sensing investigation showed that the Pt-Fe2O3-Vo materials enabled a significantly enhanced response of 26.5-50 ppm of H2, which was 17-fold higher than that of pure Fe2O3, as well as ultrafast response time (2 s), extremely low detection limit (86 ppb), and improved stability. The experimental and density functional theory (DFT) studies revealed that the abundant oxygen vacancy sites of Fe2O3 contributed to stabilizing the Pt atoms via electron transfer. In addition, the stabilized Pt atoms also greatly promote the electron transfer of H2 molecules to Fe2O3, thereby achieving an excellent H2 sensing performance. This work provides a potential strategy for the development of highly selective and stable chemical sensors.

RESUMO

In recent years, green synthesis methods of metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) have been attractive because of the more facile, cheaper, and appropriate features associated with biomolecules in MNPs biosynthesis. This research represented an easy, fast, and environmentally friendly method to biosynthesis of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONPs) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) by the Satureja hortensis leaf extract as stabilizer and reducer. The SPIONPs synthesized in co-precipitation method. The biosynthesized SPIONPs and AgNPs were studied their antifungal effects against three Botryosphaeriaceae plant pathogens, Botryosphaeria dothidea, Diplodia seriata, and Neofusicoccum parvum. UV-visible spectra (UV-Vis), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (Fe-SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM) analyses were used to evaluate the physicochemical properties and verify the formation of green synthesized SPIONPs and AgNPs. UV-Vis spectra revealed absorption peaks at 243 and 448 nm for SPIONs and 436 nm for AgNPs, respectively. Microscopic and XRD analysis showed that SPIONPs and AgNPs was found spherical in shape with an average particle size of SPIONPs and AgNPs 10 and 12 nm, respectively. The antifungal test against Botryosphaeriaceae species showed that SPIONPs and AgNPs possess antifungal properties against B. dothidea, D. seriata, and N. parvum. However, AgNPs exhibits greater antifungal activity than SPIONPs. The results of the cytotoxicity tests of SPIONs and AgNPs on the MCF-7 cell line showed that AgNPs was significantly more cytotoxic towards the MCF-7 cell line, whereas no significant cytotoxic effect was recorded by SPIONs. Therefore, these biosynthesized MNPs could be substituted for toxic fungicides that are extensively applied in agriculture and contribute to environmental health and food safety.

RESUMO

In this research, ascorbic acid (AA) was used to enhance Fe(II)/Fe(III)-activated permonosulfate (PMS) systems for the degradation of fluoranthene (FLT). AA enhanced the production of ROS in both PMS/Fe(II) and PMS/Fe(III) systems through chelation and reduction and thus improved the degradation performance of FLT. The optimal molar ratio in PMS/Fe(II)/AA/FLT and PMS/Fe(III)/AA/FLT processes were 2/2/4/1 and 5/10/5/1, respectively. In addition, the experimental results on the effect of FLT degradation under different groundwater matrixes indicated that PMS/Fe(III)/AA system was more adaptable to different water quality conditions than the PMS/Fe(II)/AA system. SO4·- was the major reactive oxygen species (ROS) responsible for FLT removal through the probe and scavenging tests in both systems. Furthermore, the degradation intermediates of FLT were analyzed using gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and the probable degradation pathways of FLT degradation were proposed. In addition, the removal of FLT was also tested in actual groundwater and the results showed that by increasing the dose and pre-adjusting the solution pH, 88.8 and 100% of the FLT was removed for PMS/Fe(II)/AA and PMS/Fe(III)/AA systems. The above experimental results demonstrated that PMS/Fe(II)/AA and PMS/Fe(III)/AA processes have a great perspective in practice for the rehabilitation of FLT-polluted groundwater.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown an association between iron deficiency (ID) and clinical outcomes in patients with heart failure (HF), irrespective of the presence of ID anemia (IDA). The current study used population-level data from a large, single-payer health care system in Canada to investigate the epidemiology of ID and IDA in patients with acute HF and those with chronic HF, and the iron supplementation practices in these settings. METHODS: All adult patients with HF in Alberta between 2012 and 2019 were identified and categorized as acute or chronic HF. HF subtypes were determined through echocardiography data, and ID (serum ferritin concentration <100 µg/L, or ferritin concentration between 100 and 300 µg/L along with transferrin saturation <20%), and IDA through laboratory data. Broad eligibility for 3 clinical trials (AFFIRM-AHF [Study to Compare Ferric Carboxymaltose With Placebo in Patients With Acute HF and ID], IRONMAN [Intravenous Iron Treatment in Patients With Heart Failure and Iron Deficiency], and HEART-FID [Randomized Placebocontrolled Trial of Ferric Carboxymaltose as Treatment for HF With ID]) was determined. RESULTS: Among the 17 463 patients with acute HF, 38.5% had iron studies tested within 30 days post-index-HF episode (and 34.2% of the 11 320 patients with chronic HF). Among tested patients, 72.6% of the acute HF and 73.9% of the chronic HF were iron-deficient, and 51.4% and 49.0% had IDA, respectively. Iron therapy was provided to 41.8% and 40.5% of patients with IDA and acute or chronic HF, respectively. Of ID patients without anemia, 19.9% and 21.7% were prescribed iron therapy. The most common type of iron therapy was oral (28.1% of patients). Approximately half of the cohort was eligible for each of the AFFIRM-AHF, intravenous iron treatment in patients with HF and ID, and HEART-FID trials. CONCLUSIONS: Current practices for investigating and treating ID in patients with HF do not align with existing guideline recommendations. Considering the gap in care, innovative strategies to optimize iron therapy in patients with HF are required.

RESUMO

Contamination of aquatic and terrestrial environment with hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) is one of the major hazards worldwide due its carcinogenicity, persistency and immobility. Different research techniques have been adopted for Cr(VI) remediation present in terrestrial and aquatic media, while adsorption being the most advance, low cost, environmentally friendly and common method. The present study discussed the mechanisms of Parthenium hysterophorus derived biochar, iron-doped zinc oxide nanoparticles (nFe-ZnO) and Fe-ZnO modified biochar (Fe-ZnO@BC) involved in Cr(VI) mobility and bioavailability. Pot experiments were conducted to study the effect of Parthenium hysterophorus derived biochar, nFe-ZnO and Fe-ZnO@BC application rates (2%, 2 mg/kg, 10 mg/kg, respectively). The results indicated that the addition of soil amendments reduced Cr(VI) mobility. The findings revealed that the reduction in chromium mobility was observed by P. hysterophorus BC, and Fe-ZnO@BC but nFe-ZnO application significantly (p = 0.05) reduced Cr(VI) and CrT uptake as compared to the control treatments. The results of SEM coupled with EDS showed a high micropores and channel, smooth surface which helped in adsorption, and may enhance soil conditions. The concentration index (CI) by different amendments in trifolium plant was followed the descending order as: nFe-ZnO > Fe-ZnO@BC > P. hysterophorus BC after 30, 60 and 90 days of harvesting, respectively. In addition, human health risk index was found less than one (H1 < 1.0) in amended soils as compared to control treatments.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Biogeochemical processing of metals including the fabrication of novel nanomaterials from metal contaminated waste streams by microbial cells is an area of intense interest in the environmental sciences. RESULTS: Here we focus on the fate of Ce during the microbial reduction of a suite of Ce-bearing ferrihydrites with between 0.2 and 4.2 mol% Ce. Cerium K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) analyses showed that trivalent and tetravalent cerium co-existed, with a higher proportion of tetravalent cerium observed with increasing Ce-bearing of the ferrihydrite. The subsurface metal-reducing bacterium Geobacter sulfurreducens was used to bioreduce Ce-bearing ferrihydrite, and with 0.2 mol% and 0.5 mol% Ce, an Fe(II)-bearing mineral, magnetite (Fe(II)(III)2O4), formed alongside a small amount of goethite (FeOOH). At higher Ce-doping (1.4 mol% and 4.2 mol%) Fe(III) bioreduction was inhibited and goethite dominated the final products. During microbial Fe(III) reduction Ce was not released to solution, suggesting Ce remained associated with the Fe minerals during redox cycling, even at high Ce loadings. In addition, Fe L2,3 X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) analyses suggested that Ce partially incorporated into the Fe(III) crystallographic sites in the magnetite. The use of Ce-bearing biomagnetite prepared in this study was tested for hydrogen fuel cell catalyst applications. Platinum/carbon black electrodes were fabricated, containing 10% biomagnetite with 0.2 mol% Ce in the catalyst. The addition of bioreduced Ce-magnetite improved the electrode durability when compared to a normal Pt/CB catalyst. CONCLUSION: Different concentrations of Ce can inhibit the bioreduction of Fe(III) minerals, resulting in the formation of different bioreduction products. Bioprocessing of Fe-minerals to form Ce-containing magnetite (potentially from waste sources) offers a sustainable route to the production of fuel cell catalysts with improved performance.

RESUMO

In this study, we synthesized magnetic MnFe2O4/ZIF-67 composite catalysts using a straightforward method, yielding catalysts that exhibited outstanding performance in catalyzing the ozonation of vanillin. This exceptional catalytic efficiency arose from the synergistic interplay between MnFe2O4 and ZIF-67. Comprehensive characterization via x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), x-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) confirmed that the incorporation of MnFe2O4 promoted the creation of oxygen vacancies, resulting in an increased presence of l adsorbed oxygen (Oads) and the generation of additional ·OH groups on the catalyst surface. Utilizing ZIF-67 as the carrier markedly enhanced the specific surface area of the catalyst, augmenting the exposure of active sites, thus improving the degradation efficiency and reducing the energy consumption. The effects of different experimental parameters (catalyst type, initial vanillin concentration, ozone dosage, initial pH value, and catalyst dosage) were also investigated, and the optimal experimental parameters (300 mg/L1.0-MnFe2O4/ZIF-67, vanillin concentration = 250 mg/L, O3 concentration = 12 mg/min, pH = 7) were obtained. The vanillin removal efficiency of MnFe2O4/ZIF-67 was increased from 74.95% to 99.54% after 30 min of reaction, and the magnetic separation of MnFe2O4/ZIF-67 was easy to be recycled and stable, and the vanillin removal efficiency of MnFe2O4/ZIF-67 was only decreased by about 8.92% after 5 cycles. Additionally, we delved into the synergistic effects and catalytic mechanism of the catalysts through kinetic fitting, reactive oxygen quenching experiments, and electron transfer analysis. This multifaceted approach provides a comprehensive understanding of the enhanced ozonation process catalyzed by MnFe2O4/ZIF-67 composite catalysts, shedding light on their potential applications in advanced oxidation processes. PRACTITIONER POINTS: A stable and recyclable magnetic composite MnFe2O4/ZIF-67 catalyst was synthesized through a simple method. The synergistic effect and catalytic mechanism of the MnFe2O4/ZIF-67 catalyst were comprehensively analyzed and discussed. A kinetic model for the catalytic ozone oxidation of vanillin was introduced, providing valuable insights into the reaction dynamics.

RESUMO

In this research, two novel Fe(III)-reducing bacteria, SG10T and SG198T of genus Geothrix, were isolated from the rice field of Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, China. Strains SG10T and SG198T were strictly anaerobic, rod-shaped and Gram-stain-negative. The two novel strains exhibited iron reduction ability, utilizing various single organic acid as the elector donor and Fe(III) as a terminal electron acceptor. Strains SG10T and SG198T showed the highest 16S rRNA sequences similarities to the type strains of Geothrix oryzisoli SG189T (99.0-99.5%) and Geothrix paludis SG195T (99.0-99.7%), respectively. The phylogenetic trees based on the 16S rRNA gene and genome 120 conserved core genes showed that strains SG10T and SG198T belong to the genus Geothrix. Average nucleotide identity (ANI) and digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) values between the phylogenetic neighbors and the two isolated strains were 86.1-94.3% and 30.7-59.5%, respectively. The major fatty acids were iso-C15:0, anteiso-C15:0, C16:0 and iso-C13:0 3OH, and MK-8 was the main respiratory quinone. According to above results, the two strains were assigned to the genus Geothrix with the names Geothrix campi sp. nov. and Geothrix mesophila sp. nov. Type strains are SG10T (= GDMCC 1.3406 T = JCM 39331 T) and SG198T (= GDMCC 62910 T = KCTC 25635 T), respectively.

RESUMO

Establishing an economic and sustained Fenton oxidation system to enhance sludge dewaterability and carbamazepine (CBZ) removal rate is a crucial path to simultaneously achieve sludge reduction and harmless. Leveraging the principles akin to "tea making", we harnessed tea waste to continually release tea polyphenols (TP), thus effectively maintaining high level of oxidation efficiency through the sustained Fenton reaction. The results illustrated that the incorporation of tea waste yielded more favorable outcomes in terms of water content reduction and CBZ removal compared to direct TP addition within the Fe(III)/hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) system. Concomitantly, this process mainly generated hydroxyl radical (•OH) via three oxidation pathways, effectively altering the properties of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and promoting the degradation of CBZ from the sludge mixture. The interval addition of Fe(III) and H2O2 heightened extracellular oxidation efficacy, promoting the desorption and removal of CBZ. The degradation of EPS prompted the transformation of bound water to free water, while the formation of larger channels drove the discharge of water. This work achieved the concept of treating waste with waste through using tea waste to treat sludge, meanwhile, can provide ideas for subsequent sludge harmless disposal.

RESUMO

Fe(II) regeneration plays a crucial role in the electro-Fenton process, significantly influencing the rate of ·OH formation. In this study, a method is proposed to improve Fe(II) regeneration through N-doping aimed at enhancing the adsorption capacity of the activated carbon cathode for Fe(III). N-doping not only enriched the pore structure on the surface of activated carbon, providing numerous adsorption sites, but also significantly increased the adsorption energy for Fe(III). Among the types of nitrogen introduced, pyridine-N exhibited the most substantial enhancement effect, followed by pyrrole-N, while graphite-N showed a certain degree of inhibition. Furthermore, N-doping facilitated the adsorption of all forms of Fe(III) by activated carbon. The adsorption and electrosorption rates of the NAC-900 electrode for Fe(III) were 30.33% and 42.36%, respectively. Such modification markedly enhanced the Fe3+/Fe2+ cycle within the electro-Fenton system. The NAC-900 system demonstrated an impressive phenol degradation efficiency of 93.67%, alongside the lowest electricity consumption attributed to the effective "adsorption-reduction" synergy for Fe(III) on the NAC-900 electrode. Compared to the AC cathode electro-Fenton system, the degradation efficiency of the NAC-900 cathode electro-Fenton system at pH = levels ranging from 3 to 5 exceeded 90%; thus, extending the pH applicability of the electro-Fenton process. The degradation efficiency of phenol using the NAC-900 cathode electro-Fenton system in various water matrices approached 90%, indicating robust performance in real wastewater treatment scenarios. This research elucidates the impact of cathodic Fe(III) adsorption on Fe(II) regeneration within the electro-Fenton system, and clarifies the influence of different N- doping types on the cathodic adsorption of Fe(III).

RESUMO

An innovative task was undertaken to convert ubiquitous and toxic electronic waste, waste toner powder (WTP), into novel adsorbents. Alkaline modification with KOH, NaOH, and NH4OH was employed for the first time to synthesize a series of surface-modified WTP with enhanced dispersibility and adsorption capacity. XRD, XRF, FTIR, and BET analyses confirmed that the prepared KOH-WTP, NaOH-WTP, and NH4OH-WTP were oxygen-functionalized self-doped iron oxide-graphite nanocomposites. The prepared adsorbents were used to remove methylene blue and tetracycline from aqueous solutions. KOH-WTP (0.1 g/100 mL) adsorbed 80% of 10 mg/L methylene blue within 1 h, while 0.1 g/100 mL NH4OH-WTP removed 72% of 10 mg/L tetracycline in 3 h. Exploring surface chemistry by altering solution pH and temperature suggested that hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interactions, π-π electron stacking, and pore filling were plausible adsorption mechanisms. Scanning electron microscopy revealed a diminishing adsorbents porosity after adsorption proving the filling of pores by the adsorbates. KOH-WTP and NH4OH-WTP removed 77% and 61% of methylene blue and tetracycline respectively in the fourth reuse. The adsorption data of methylene blue and tetracycline fitted the Freundlich isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacities of KOH-WTP and NH4OH-WTP for methylene blue and tetracycline were 59 mg/g and 43 mg/g respectively. The prepared adsorbents were also compared with other adsorbents to assess their performance. The transformation of waste toner powder into magnetically separable oxygen-functionalized WTP with outstanding recyclability and adsorption capacity showcases a significant advancement in sustainable wastewater treatment. This further aligns with the principles of the circular economy through the utilization of toxic e-waste in value-added applications. Additionally, magnetic separation of surface-modified WTP post-treatment can curtail filtration and centrifugation expenses and adsorbent loss during wastewater treatment.

RESUMO

Objective: To investigate the clinical efficacy and safety of ferric derisomaltose injection versus iron sucrose injection in the treatment of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) . Methods: A total of 120 patients with iron deficiency anemia admitted from June 2021 to March 2023 were given intravenous iron supplementation with ferric derisomaltose to assess the efficacy and safety of hemoglobin (HGB) elevation before and after treatment. Simultaneously, the clinical effects of iron supplementation with iron sucrose were compared to those of inpatient patients during the same period. Results: Baseline values were comparable in both groups. Within 12 weeks of treatment, the elevated HGB level in the ferric derisomaltose group was higher than that of the iron sucrose group, with a statistical difference at all time points, and the proportion of HGB increased over 20 g/L in the patients treated for 4 weeks was higher (98.7%, 75.9% ). During the treatment with ferric derisomaltose and iron sucrose, the proportion of mild adverse reactions in the ferric derisomaltose group was slightly lower than that of the iron sucrose group, and neither group experienced any serious adverse reactions. The patients responded well to the infusion treatment, with no reports of pain or pigmentation at the injection site. Conclusion: The treatment of IDA patients with ferric derisomaltose has a satisfactory curative effect, with the advantages of rapidity, accuracy, and safety. Therefore, it is worthy of widespread clinical use.

RESUMO

In order to evaluate the feasibility of using Burkholderia sp. Y4 as a cadmium (Cd)-reducing bacterial agent in contaminated wheat fields, the changes in the rhizosphere soil microbial community and Cd available state, as well as the content and transport characteristics of Cd in the wheat root, basal node, internode, and grain under the treatment of strain Y4 were tested using microbial high-throughput sequencing, step-by-step extraction, subcellular distribution, and occurrence analyses. The results showed that root application of strain Y4 significantly reduced the root and grain Cd content of wheat by 7.7% and 30.3%, respectively, compared with that in the control treatment. The Cd content and Cd transfer factor results in wheat vegetative organs showed that strain Y4 reduced the Cd transfer factor from basal node to internode by 79.3%, and Cd content in the wheat internode stem also decreased by 50.9%. The study of Cd occurrence morphology showed that strain Y4 treatment increased the proportion of residual Cd in roots and basal ganglia, decreased the contents of inorganic and water-soluble Cd in roots, and increased the content of residual Cd in basal ganglia. Further examination of the subcellular distribution of Cd showed that the Cd content in root cell walls and basal ganglia cell fluid increased by 21.3% and 98.2%, respectively, indicating that the Cd fixation ability of root cell walls and basal ganglia cell fluid was improved by the strain Y4 treatment. In the rhizosphere soil, it was found that the microbial community structure was changed by strain Y4 application. Under the Y4 treatment, the relative abundance of Burkholderia increased from 9.6% to 11.5%, whereas that of Acidobacteriota decreased. Additionally, the relative abundance of Gemmatimonadales, Pseudomonadales, and Chitinophagales were also increased by strain Y4 treatment. At the same time, the application of strain Y4 increased the pH value of rhizosphere soil by 8.3%. The contents of exchangeable Cd, carbonate-bound Cd, and iron-manganese oxide-bound Cd in the soil decreased by 44.4%, 21.7%, and 15.9%, respectively, whereas the proportion of residual Cd reached 53.6%. Root application of strain Y4 increased the contents of nitrate nitrogen and ammonium nitrogen in the soil by 22.0% and 21.4%, respectively, and the contents of alkaline nitrogen also increased to a certain extent. In conclusion, the root application of strain Y4 not only improved soil nitrogen availability but also inhibited Cd transport and accumulation from contaminated soil to wheat grains in a "two-stage" manner by reducing Cd availability in rhizosphere soil and improving Cd interception and fixation capacity of wheat roots and basal nodes. Therefore, Burkholderia Y4 has application potential as a Cd-reducing and growth-promoting agent in wheat.

RESUMO

Fluorescent film sensors are ideal for the real-time outdoor detection of heavy metal ions of Fe3+, but they are limited because of their low sensitivity and long response time due to their special structure. In this work, we constructed a fluorescent hydrogel for the specific detection of Fe3+, utilizing poly(9-fluorenecarboxylic acid) (PFCA) as the sensing moiety and sodium alginate (SA) as the cross-linking substrate, which exhibited a rapid and selective recognition of Fe3+ among a panel of 16 anions and 21 cations. It can sense Fe3+ at 0.1 nM immediately owing to the porous network structure of the PFCA-SA film that provided enhanced ion transport channels and active sites, and the "molecular line effect" of polymer PFCA. Moreover, we successfully applied this platform to detect Fe3+ in four different vegetable samples. This work provides an innovative and effective strategy for fabricating green and sustainable fluorescent sensors.

RESUMO

In aluminum electrolysis, the iron-rich cover material is formed on the cover material and the steel rod connecting the carbon anode. Due to the high iron content in the iron-rich cover material, it differs from traditional cover material and thus requires harmless recycling and treatment. A process was proposed and used in this study to recovery F, Al, and Fe elements from the iron-rich cover material. This process involved aluminum sulfate solution leaching for fluorine recovery and alkali-acid synergistic leaching for α-Al2O3 and Fe2O3 recovery were obtained. The optimal leaching rates for F, Na, Ca, Fe, and Si were 93.92, 96.25, 94.53, 4.48, and 28.87%, respectively. The leaching solution and leaching residue were obtained. The leaching solution was neutralized to obtain the aluminum hydroxide fluoride hydrate (AHFH, AlF1.5(OH)1.5·(H2O)0.375). AHFH was calcined to form a mixture of AlF3 and Al2O3 with a purity of 96.14%. The overall recovery rate of F in the entire process was 92.36%. Additionally, the leaching residue was sequentially leached with alkali and acid to obtain the acid leach residue α-Al2O3. The pH of the acid-leached solution was adjusted to produce a black-brown precipitate, which was converted to Fe2O3 under a high-temperature calcination, and the recovery rate of Fe in the whole process was 94.54%. Therefore, this study provides a new method for recovering F, Al, and Fe in iron-rich cover material, enabling the utilization of aluminum hazardous waste sources.

RESUMO

A lab-scale reactor with a fixed-bed hematite catalyst for the effective decomposition of H2O2 and bacteria inactivation was designed. The bactericidal effect is the largest at a low initial bacterial count of 2·103 CFU/L, which is typical for natural surface waters. When using a 5 mM H2O2 solution and a residence time of 104 min, the reduction in the number of E. coli bacteria is about 3.5-log. At a higher initial bacterial count of 1-2·104 CFU/L, a 5 mM H2O2 solution reduces the bacteria number by about 4-log. The H2O2 decomposition follows the log-linear kinetics of a first-order reaction while the bacterial inactivation does not. The kinetics of bacterial inactivation was described using the Weibull model in the modified form: log10(N0/N) = b · tn. The values of the non-linearity parameter n were found to be lower than 1, indicating that bacterial inactivation slows down over time. With increasing initial H2O2 concentration, the rate parameter b increases while the non-linearity parameter n decreases. With increasing temperature, both parameters increase. The stability of the catalyst has been proved by XRD, FTIR, SEM, and ICP-OES. The concentration of iron leaching into water during disinfection is much lower than the limit declared by WHO for iron in drinking water. The results show that technical-grade hematite is a promising Fenton-like catalyst for water disinfection. The fixed-bed reactor can be the basis of the mobile installations for water purification in emergencies.

RESUMO

Toxic organic dyes-containing wastewater treatment by adsorption and photocatalytic techniques is widely applied, but adsorbents and photocatalysts are often synthesized through chemical methods, leading to secondary pollution by released chemicals. Here, we report a benign method using Tecoma stans floral extract to produce MgFe2O4/ZnO (MGFOZ) nanoparticles for adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of coomassie brilliant blue (CBB) dye. Green MGFOZ owned a surface area of 9.65 m2/g and an average grain size of 54 nm. This bio-based nanomaterial showed higher removal percentage and better recyclability (up to five cycles) than green MgFe2O4 and ZnO nanoparticles. CBB adsorption by MGFOZ was examined by kinetic and isotherm models with better fittings of Bangham and Langmuir or Temkin. RSM-based optimization was conducted to reach an actual adsorption capacity of 147.68 mg/g. Moreover, MGFOZ/visible light system showed a degradation efficiency of 89% CBB dye after 120 min. CBB adsorption can be controlled by both physisorption and chemisorption while •O2- and •OH radicals are responsible for photo-degradation of CBB dye. This study suggested that MGFOZ can be a promising adsorbent and catalyst for removal of organic dyes in water.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: What is the relationship between blood tests for iron deficiency, including anaemia, and the response to intravenous iron in patients with heart failure? METHODS: In the IRONMAN trial, 1137 patients with heart failure, ejection fraction ≤ 45%, and either serum ferritin < 100 µg/L or transferrin saturation (TSAT) < 20% were randomized to intravenous ferric derisomaltose (FDI) or usual care. Relationships were investigated between baseline anaemia severity, ferritin and TSAT, to changes in haemoglobin from baseline to 4 months, Minnesota Living with Heart Failure (MLwHF) score and 6-minute walk distance achieved at 4 months, and clinical events, including heart failure hospitalization (recurrent) or cardiovascular death. RESULTS: The rise in haemoglobin after administering FDI, adjusted for usual care, was greater for lower baseline TSAT (Pinteraction < .0001) and ferritin (Pinteraction = .028) and more severe anaemia (Pinteraction = .014). MLwHF scores at 4 months were somewhat lower (better) with FDI for more anaemic patients (overall Pinteraction = .14; physical Pinteraction = .085; emotional Pinteraction = .043) but were not related to baseline TSAT or ferritin. Blood tests did not predict difference in achieved walking distance for those randomized to FDI compared to control. The absence of anaemia or a TSAT ≥ 20% was associated with lower event rates and little evidence of benefit from FDI. More severe anaemia or TSAT < 20%, especially when ferritin was ≥100 µg/L, was associated with higher event rates and greater absolute reductions in events with FDI, albeit not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: This hypothesis-generating analysis suggests that anaemia or TSAT < 20% with ferritin > 100 µg/L might identify patients with heart failure who obtain greater benefit from intravenous iron. This interpretation requires confirmation.

RESUMO

Nowadays, organic dyes are prevalent components in wastewater discharges due to their extensive use in various industries, posing a significant threat to public health across different organisms. As a result, wastewater treatment has become an indispensable requirement. In this study, we synthesized supermagnetic iron oxide (Fe3O4 NPs) and gold-iron oxide bimetallic nanoparticles (Au@Fe3O4 BNPs) using an eco-friendly method that involved natural compounds extracted from brown Egyptian propolis. We employed UV-visible spectroscopy, FTIR, XRD, VSM, SEM, HRTEM, EDX, Zeta potential and XPS techniques to examine the optical characteristics, chemical structure, crystalline structure, magnetic properties, morphology, size, and chemical composition of these biosynthesized nanoparticles. Furthermore, these nanoparticles were used as nanocatalysts for the removal of cationic dyes. The photocatalytic results indicated high efficiency in the removal of methylene blue (MB), crystal violet (CV), and malachite green (MG) dyes from aqueous solutions using Fe3O4 NPs and Au@Fe3O4 BNPs. The removal rates of MB, CV, and MG were about 95.2% in 70 min, 99.4% in 50 min, and 96.2% in 60 min for Fe3O4 NPs, and 97.1% in 50 min, 99.1% in 30 min, and 98.1% in 50 min for Au@Fe3O4 BNPs, respectively. The study also assessed the potential anti-radical properties of the extract, Fe3O4 NPs, and Au@Fe3O4 BNPs using the DPPH assay, and the results demonstrated their antioxidant activity. Finally, these Fe3O4 NPs and Au@Fe3O4 BNPs have the potential to serve as efficient antioxidants and photocatalysts for removing basic dyes from water.

RESUMO

Phase change materials enhance the thermal comfort of buildings by utilizing stored thermal energy. In large air-conditioning systems, ice storage plays a crucial role in managing peak power loads. This experimental study explores the freezing characteristics of deionized water containing suspended iron oxide nanoparticles in spherical containers for cold storage. The synthesized nanofluid phase change material (NFPCM) was investigated for its freezing behavior under surrounding fluid temperatures of - 2 °C and - 6 °C. The uniformity in charging of NFPCM is the unique feature prevalent in the first quarter of the charging, with 50% mass frozen observed. An increased surface heat flux of 200% was achieved using NFPCM at Tsurr = -6 °C. The chiller operational time is optimally reduced by 75% by considering twice the container design's phase change materials. Adding iron oxide nanoparticles and partial charging is suitable for uniform heat transfer for the shorter freezing duration in cooling applications. The novelty of the present study is that the proposed NFPCM nearly nullifies the subcooling effects of deionized water without using nucleating agents. This NFPCM appreciably enhances power competence, yielding large-scale air-conditioning systems' desired economic impact and sustainability. The reported results align with Sustainable Development Goals (7-Affordable and Clean Energy and 13-Climate Action).
